John McDermott

Dr John McDermott is the Executive Director of Motu Economic and Public Policy Research, a Senior Advisor at Wigram Capital Advisors, the Chair of the Independent Research Association of New Zealand (IRANZ) and Chair of the Red Cross Foundation.

Before starting at Motu in 2019, he was Assistant Governor and Head of Economics at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. He has also held positions at the National Bank of New Zealand and the International Monetary Fund.

Dr McDermott holds a PhD in Economics from Yale University. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on international commodity prices, real exchange rates, the business cycle, and other aspects of monetary policy. Dr McDermott was given the 2019 NZIER annual economics award.
